Some claim he is indeed a real doctor - a disgraced anatomist and graverobber, his obsession leading him to do some most questionable things; whilst others claim the ellusive Dr. X is actually esteemed magician Kit Rimbaldi - in hiding since being identified as the architect behind the theft of the crown jewels; whilst yet other parties claim he is a former army colonel - a crack marksmen who suffered terrible injury in the Crimea, yet questions still remain as to how he survived whilst the rest of the men under his command perished.
